A New Bedford gym owner accused of supplying mass quantities of heroin to a drug dealer has had his plea hearing postponed.

39-year-old Sharik Mendes appeared in federal court in Boston Tuesday, ready to plead guilty to charges of conspiracy and heroin distribution. However, according to The Standard Times, the judge postponed the plea hearing after a discrepancy over the plea agreement filed by prosecutors and the public defender. The judge said the signed plea agreement from Mendes contained a waiver of Mendes' right to appeal, which was objected by the public defender who said the waiver was not in the agreed upon final plea agreement.

Before postponing the hearing, the judge warned Mendes that by pleading guilty he would expose himself to a possible 20-year prison sentence and a fine of $1 million.
