NEW BEDFORD - Two fourth grade students at New Bedford's Gomes Elementary School say an older boy tried to rob them while armed with a knife this morning.

New Bedford Police say the two male students reported they were walking to school near Acushnet Avenue and South Street when they were approached by a male Hispanic teen who demanded money and food from the children. The young students refused to give the suspect anything, and he attempted to trip them. One of the children suffered a minor scratch to his hand when he turned around and made contact with a black folding knife the suspect was holding.

A nearby 30-year-old man saw the situation and intervened, and the suspect ran off.

The boys continued to school, where the school nurse tended to the minor scratch on one of the boy's hands.

The suspect is described as an Hispanic teen, about 15 years old, about 5'8" tall, last seen wearing jeans and a brown hooded sweatshirt. He also had very short hair and a goatee.
