In the early hours of Sunday, September 1, 12 determined individuals set out on a solemn journey across New Bedford, some carrying 40-pound bags.

They set off on a 5-mile ruck, as it's known, from Buttonwood Park to the New Bedford Fire Department's Station 9.

This was no ordinary walk. It was a tribute to Matthew Forand, the beloved firefighter, husband, father and friend who died unexpectedly in August.

Leading the way was Jason Ray, a U.S. Army veteran and co-founder of the charity Rucking for Veterans. Alongside him was his wife, Genevieve Ray. Both were driven by a deep sense of duty to honor Forand’s memory. They called upon the community, asking anyone willing to join them in remembering a man who had given so much for so long to the city he served.

The ruck began just after 7 a.m. Participants pushed through the physical challenge, spurred on by the emotional weight of their mission. The route took them through the heart of the city, each step a reminder of Forand's enduring legacy.

By 8:53, the group had arrived at the corner of Tarkiln Hill Road and Ashley Boulevard, where they were met with a warm, emotional reception from Forand's fellow firefighters, including Fire Chief Scott Kruger. Hugs, handshakes, and tears were shared as the community came together in a powerful moment of remembrance.

Among the participants was Forand’s son, Evan, who carried his father’s helmet across the finish line, a poignant symbol of the hero who was taken far too soon.

The ruck was more than just a physical challenge; it was a collective act of love, respect and honor for a man who will never be forgotten.
