When the firefighters arrived, a resident of one of the seven units at that address told them that a shower curtain was on fire in the second floor bathroom.

Crews brought a fire hose up to the second floor and found the home's sprinkler system had already activated, containing the blaze in the bathroom.

The flames had spread to other combustible items in the room, but firefighters were able to put them out with the hose, according to the department.

New Bedford police and EMS assisted at the scene.

Two adults and three children are displaced and are being helped by the American Red Cross.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
