New Bedford Still Searching for City Christmas Tree

It’s only the first week of fall, but the holidays are already top of mind in New Bedford.

The City of New Bedford wrote a post on Facebook on Monday, September 27 seeking help from the public to find a key component needed to celebrate the holiday season this year.

“The City of New Bedford is looking for a 30-foot tree for this year’s holiday festivities, and hoping that a donor is able to contribute one soon.”

As stated in the post, a private donor usually offers a tree to the city, but that has not come through for 2021 just yet. The City even mentioned that if someone has a tree on their property that needs removal, the Department of Public Infrastructure would be more than happy to do so.

This tree would be displayed on the steps of the New Bedford Free Public Library downtown for an official tree lighting along with the city’s other holiday activities.

“A Balsam fir is ideal, but the city is willing to consider other species or trees that aren’t quite 30 feet tall. The tree does need to have a point on top, for a star.”

The tree needs to be up by Thanksgiving, which is on Thursday, November 25.

I usually do not get into the holiday spirit until the Spirit of Halloween packs up and closes down for the season. However, I’m looking forward to seeing who comes through for this festive celebration.
