NEW BEDFORD (WBSM) — A child was struck and killed by a motor vehicle this afternoon while riding their bicycle in New Bedford's North End.

Fatal Incident on Cherokee Street

New Bedford Police said that at 3:30 p.m., officers responded to the area of Cherokee Street for a report of a motor vehicle crash involving a child on a bicycle.

Police said the child was struck by the vehicle and sustained fatal injuries. No information was released about the child’s age or identity as of this writing.

The driver of the vehicle remained on the scene and is cooperating with investigators.

Multi-Agency Investigation Launched

The crash remains under investigation by the New Bedford Police Traffic Division, the Massachusetts State Police CPAC Unit, and the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office.

Mayor Mitchell Issues Statement

“Words cannot adequately describe a tragedy so profound,” New Bedford Mayor Jon Mitchell said. “This child had their entire life ahead of them. I offer my deepest condolences to the family and whatever support we could conceivably offer.”
