A flag-raising ceremony held Friday afternoon on the steps of New Bedford City Hall recognized 22 Latino countries. The ceremony commemorates Hispanic Heritage Month, and a weekend of celebration in New Bedford.

Mariangeli "Angie" Vargas, President of the Puerto Rican and Latin American Art and Culture Committee of New Bedford tells WBSM News keeping the culture alive is important for the younger generations.

The First Latino Cultural Festival is taking place in New Bedford Saturday to continue to work towards that goal. The festival begins with a parade stepping off from Fort Taber at 10am, with the festival officially beginning at noon at Hazelwood Park.
