Reviving New Bedford’s Biking Committee [TOWNSQUARE SUNDAY]
Bike riders take note: a city man is trying to bring new life to the New Bedford Bike Committee.
Interviewed this week on Townsquare Sunday, David Civitron said the bike committee has been "off and on" for the past few years, generally because of the pandemic. With serious cases of the virus on the decline, he now thinks this is a good time to get the committee going again.
"Bike riding and getting people together is a great combination, especially in a time where getting together has been challenging in the last few years," Civitron said. "Biking is a good way to get people together without really getting them too close."
The New Bedford Bike Committee is hosting a meeting Monday night, June 13, at 6 p.m. at the James Arnold Mansion on County Street, also known as the Wamsutta Club. Civitron said he's hoping bike riders of all types will show up, from casual riders to athletes to commuters and kids doing "wheelies" down the street.
"The spirit of the cycling community has not died, so this a great time to bring it back," he said.
He said an active bike committee can serve as an instrument to lobby government leaders for better biking conditions and connections with other communities.
Civitron said New Bedford features some "really great" biking infrastructure, but there is always room for improvement.
"We would like to unite all bike riders in the city, hear their voices and learn from their experiences, and put that information into action," he said.
