AHA! Night in New Bedford happens this month on Thursday, October 9. The theme is "Tunes, Treats and Creative Streets." So put on your Halloween costume and join the fun.

Downtown Dance Party & Costume Contest

AHA! Director Kim Goddard visited Townsquare Sunday with details on the celebration, including a downtown dance party at the Carter's Clothing parking lot starting at 5 p.m.

"This is going to be fun. We're calling it the New Moon Dance Party, and hoping people will come in costume and be inspired by the culture and history of New Bedford," she said. "There will be prizes, so we'll be keeping an eye out for the best-dressed."

Also 3rd Eye Youth Empowerment is collecting old costumes that are no longer being used, so if you have one or two, bring them along.

Live Music Lineup & Performance Schedule

The music continues at 760 Purchase Street at 5:30 p.m. It's an AHA Seaport Session with Vudu Sister and Myles Goulart performing. Buttonwood Brass performs from 6 p.m., to 8 p.m. at the Harbor Hotel on Union Street, while the Neil McCarthy Trio wraps up the evening at the Pour Farm Tavern from 8 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.

Pumpkin Parade & Youth Activities

Students from Nativity Prep are joining the AHA! Night calendar with pumpkin decorating and a scavenger hunt.

Pumpkins are also in the spotlight at the Rotch-Jones-Duff House on County Street. That will be the site of the Great Pumpkin Parade and more. That runs from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The Whaling Museum is also hosting a scavenger hunt, a limbo contest and a workshop on building giant, colorful kites.

"This is going to be something to see," Goddard said. "It's going to be a hands-on workshop that celebrates a Mayan tradition from southern Guatemala."

Art Museum Reveal & Reception at Wainer Woods

The New Bedford Art Museum will also be involved on October 9, unveiling a new project soon to be completed at Wainer Woods in Westport. A reception is planned from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Details on all AHA activities, including times and venues, can be found at ahanewbedford.org.

Protect Yourself Against Mosquito Bites This Summer and Fall

The New Bedford Health Department recommends these precautionary measures to help protect yourself from mosquito bites as West Nile virus and Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) continue to be a problem on the SouthCoast.

A Hidden Oasis Off the Grid in Sandwich, Massachusetts

Off the Grid in Sandwich, Massachusetts is unlike any other restaurant experience on Cape Cod. It basically consists of a bus, a food truck and a small shack all permanently parked off the side of the road, and it serves everything from breakfast to Caribbean barbeque to seafood to Mexican, while creating a unique atmosphere both indoors and out.
