The New Bedford Police Department has a new Public Information Officer.

Lt. Scott Carola will communicate with the media and the public in his new role as PIO and administrative assistant to Chief Joseph Cordeiro. He replaces Capt. Nathaniel Rodriguez, who took over command of Station 2 earlier this month.

Carola began his career as a corrections officer for the Bristol County Sheriff’s Department and worked at the Ash Street Jail from 1997 from 2000, according to a media release from the department. Since joining the New Bedford Police Department in 2000, he has worked as a patrolman, a detective assigned to the Organized Crime Intelligence Bureau, a sergeant in charge of the Gang Unit, and most recently, a detective lieutenant assigned to the Major Crimes Division.

“Many will also know Carola as a talented and well-respected artist here in the city,” Cordeiro stated.

Carola says he loves New Bedford, where he is a lifelong resident, and looks forward to serving the community in this new capacity.

“The department consistently looks for new and innovative ways to interact and communicate with members of the community,” said Cordeiro. “As the tools and channels for communications change and evolve rapidly, I am confident Lt. Carola is well-positioned to provide excellent service.”

Carola can be reached at (508) 991-6300 ext. 79427
