New Bedford Police Chief David A. Provencher, 59, died Sunday evening due to respiratory arrest.

According to a statement from Mayor Jon Mitchell's office, Provencher passed away at approximately 7:30 pm at Saint Luke's Hospital.

“Tonight the City of New Bedford lost an outstanding police chief and a great man.  Our prayers go out to Dave’s family.  We will do everything in our power to support them at this most difficult time,” said Mayor Jon Mitchell.

Provencher replaced Ronald Teachman as chief in April 2011.

He was a lifelong city resident and spent over 35 years on the city's police department.

Mayor Mitchell added, “Chief Provencher leaves behind a legacy of a more modern and effective police department and a stronger New Bedford community.  I am shocked and saddened by his passing.  I will miss him as a colleague and friend.”

Funeral arrangements will be announced later this week.
