The New Bedford teachers union president says he welcomes the City Council's involvement in school department affairs.

Responding to a Standard Times editorial letter, Lou St. John says over the last several years, the Council may have lost trust in the School Committee after having to appropriate extra funds to the schools from the city-side of government in order to make up a multi-million dollar deficit.

The editorial alleged the Council was not qualified to involve itself in school district affairs.

A joint committee between the City Council and the School Committee was recently formed to review school department spending.
