New Bedford was one of many communities nationwide to hold a National Night Out Tuesday evening.

The event drew dozens of families to Paul Walsh Field with the goal of strengthening relationships between residents and law enforcement.

Bristol County District Attorney Thomas Quinn says he believes the initiative is working.

"Nationally obviously there's some issue raised in some cases but I think this is important to establish confidence in the authorities and law enforcement," Quinn said.

Kids had the chance to win refurbished bicycles from New Bedford Police and school supplies donated by Target. They were also treated to free food, music, and demonstrations by law enforcement and other public safety officials.

Families in attendance said they enjoyed the information provided by officials and the chance to enjoy a warm summer night taking part in kid-friendly activities.
