New Bedford's annual National Night Out Against Crime gets underway tonight. Area residents are encouraged to meet the men and women sworn to protect them, and enjoy fun and free activities.

Jerry Pinto, President of Neighborhoods United, says this year the event will contain a solemn reminder of the dangers law enforcement officers face. "We are going to take the time to recognize every fallen police officer during the line of duty throughout our country," said Pinto.

Pinto says Neighborhoods United has partnered with New Bedford, Fairhaven, Dartmouth, and Acushnet Police, as well as the Bristol County Sheriff's and District Attorney's offices. There will be demonstrations from different departments and free food.

National Night Out takes place from 5-8pm tonight at Ashley Park in the South End of New Bedford.
