NEW BEDFORD — Fire departments from several SouthCoast communities responded to multiple reports of brush fires along Route 140 Monday morning.

New Bedford firefighters responded to a brush fire near Exit 4 before 7:30 a.m.

Lakeville fire officials also extinguished eight brush fires along Route 140  from County Street to Route 79 in the town. Firefighters from the Freetown Fire Department provided assistance in extinguishing the flames. All of the fires were extinguished within an hour.

Lakeville Fire Chief Michael O'Brien tells WBSM News that multiple fires like the ones reported Monday are usually sparked by a vehicle dragging a piece of metal, causing sparks to land among dry brush.

No injuries were reported.

The fires are under investigation.
