More On Jared Remy’s Guilty Plea

The son of longtime Boston Red Sox broadcaster Jerry Remy pleaded guilty Tuesday to the August 2013 murder of his girlfriend and was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Jared Remy, 35, entered guilty pleas in Middlesex Superior Court on charges of
first-degree murder, assault with a dangerous weapon, assault and battery and
violating a restraining order.

Middlesex Superior Court Judge Kathe Tuttman handed down a life sentence for
the murder charge, as well as concurrent prison sentences for the remaining
charges.

Jared Remy was accused of fatally stabbing Jennifer Martel at their townhouse
on Aug. 15, two days after she obtained an emergency restraining order against
him following his arrest on assault and battery charges.

Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan said Remy lashed out at Martel "in a
fit of rage" because he perceived he was losing control of her.

"Today, with this plea, the defendant has been held accountable for his
actions," said Ryan. "This plea ensures that Jared Remy will spend the rest of
his natural life in prison."

Remy, covered in blood, was arrested at the scene. Neighbors who witnessed the
altercation and tried to help Martel were reportedly kept away as Remy slashed
at them.

Waltham Police Chief Keith MacPherson said he was pleased the case was
resolved quickly.

"I hope this resolution will bring some comfort to the Martel family," he
said.

Jerry Remy is a former Red Sox second baseman and current color analyst for
games on the New England Sports Network. He returned to the booth this season
after taking a leave of absence last year following the murder.

In a statement he read to the court Tuesday, Jared Remy said his family
thought of Martel as one of their own children.

"Blame me for this, not my family," Jared Remy said. "Jen always said my
family was her real family. ... I'm the bad apple and if you ask my family,
they'd rather have me dead than her."

Jared Remy said the night of the killing Martel "had a knife in her hand and
threatened me with our daughter ... so I killed her."

He said he was in court "not for a deal but to take responsibility for what I
