The search for a new police chief for the City of New Bedford is winding down.

Mayor Jon Mitchell says an announcement is forthcoming. "We've done the set of finalists interviews and we've got background checks and whatnot. So, that's got to play out. But I would think (an announcement will be made) certainly in the next two weeks.

WBSM News has learned the identity of the three finalists, but has been asked to keep that information confidential until an official announcement is made.

The recommendations were made to Mayor Jon Mitchell by a screening committee.

It was previously reported that New Bedford Police Lt. John Chaves, Captain Joseph Cordeiro, and Detective Captain Steven Vicente had submitted applications for the position of Chief. Two other unnamed applicants are also being considered for the job.
