Michelle Carter’s Appeal to be Heard in Court This Week
BOSTON — Michelle Carter will return to court this week in an effort to refute the involuntary manslaughter conviction brought against her earlier this year.
Carter is appealing the conviction that was handed down in June in connection to the death of Conrad Roy in 2014. Roy committed suicide by running a generator inside of his truck in a Fairhaven parking lot and inhaling the fumes containing carbon monoxide. A judge found that Carter caused Roy's death when she instructed him via text to "get back in" the truck .
Prosecutors are expected to defend the conviction, saying it should stand.
Attorneys for Carter say in court documents that the case will set precedent "for who may be prosecuted for encouraging suicide with words alone."
Carter was 17 when Roy died.
Carter, of Plainville, was sentenced to 15 months in prison.
The Supreme Judicial Court will hear arguments in Carter's case beginning Thursday.
