Following Monday's New Bedford Memorial Day parade, South Coast veterans gathered at Clasky Common Park to honor their fallen comrades.

The city held a dedication ceremony at the war memorial, as names of veterans who died in the past year were read.

Iraq Veteran Chris Gomes told WBSM News Memorial Day is important to veterans no matter what age. "I think the brothership and sistership between veterans, whether you're young or older, its there regardless of when you served."

During the ceremony, military veterans and city officials who served spoke about the importance of Memorial Day.

Marine Corps Veteran, Del Garcia says part of his work as a VFW Post Commander is to make sure veterans who can't make it to parades and ceremonies aren't forgotten. Garcia and other VFW members visit veterans in nursing homes once a month, along with other veteran services throughout the year.

Garcia said, "Each day that I am free to work, to live and choose what I want to do, its always going back to the day of memorial."
