Mayor Jon Mitchell says he shares some of the same concerns as leaders in Acushnet in regards to eversource's proposed LNG expansion project. The proposal calls for newer, larger tanks at it's existing facility off of Peckham Road.

Mitchell says he's a bit skeptic of Eversource's claims that the tanks are a response to increased LNG demand in the area during the colder months. "Do you really need that much for five weeks out of the winter? The answer may be 'yes' but it may not be. So I'd like to know whether they actually intend to use that facility as an export base," said Mitchell.

Earlier this week, Acushnet selectmen and the Fire Chief storngly opposed language that would allow Eversource to truck liquefied natural gas from the facility using public roads. Mitchell says he is just as concerned, as those trucks would utilize New Bedford roadways, as well.
