Officials with the Massachusetts Department of Transportation say the $100 million estimate to replace the New Bedford-Fairhaven Bridge is not too far off.

MassDOT has begun a study which will result in recommended improvements to Route 6 between New Bedford and Fairhaven, with a heavy focus on the antiquated bridge. John Weston with MassDOT tells WBSM News he's confident the majority of residents wouldn't mind seeing the bridge replaced.

The 8-month study will also assess the road's ease of access for pedestrians and cyclists.

The nearly $500,000 study will include two more public meetings as it winds down early next year.
