The Massachusetts Department of Transportation has awarded another round of grants in its Complete Streets Funding program, and the City of New Bedford is one of a dozen recipients.

According to MassDOT, a “Complete Street” is one that enables safe, convenient, and comfortable travel for users of all ages and abilities regardless of their mode of transportation.

State Senator Mark Montigny (D-New Bedford) recently announced New Bedford will receive a $400,000 grant to construct raised bikeways along West Rodney French Boulevard.

"This grant will enhance our waterfront access by constructing accessible bikeways along West Rodney French so that our South End can continue to showcase its beautiful shoreline," said Montigny.

MassDOT says the new bike lanes will provide safe and direct access from existing bike accommodations along JFK Boulevard. The grant will also provide for pedestrian safety upgrades, streetscaping, and lighting improvements.
