Massachusetts Bill Would Add 988 Lifeline to Student IDs
Legislation pending in Massachusetts would require the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline number to be included on all new or replacement student ID cards for public school students in grades 6-12, as well as on ID cards for public and private higher education institutions.
The bill, An Act Relative to Student Mental Health, is before the Joint Committee on Mental Health, Substance Use and Recovery.
A summary of the proposed legislation states, "The 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline directs all callers and texters to trained staff who are available to provide free, confidential emotional support for those in crisis."
It further states, "Making suicide prevention resources more available and accessible will help ensure that every student is aware of the life-saving resources that are available to them at any time."
The legislation, sponsored by Northampton Senator Joanne M. Comerford, was recently presented for a hearing on Beacon Hill and must be reported out of committee by December to be considered this session.

Those in need may also visit the 988 Lifeline website to access mental health support, including an online chat and links to a 988 videophone via ASL.
The Springfield-based WWLP-TV reported, "Advocates see the 988 measure as a small, cost-effective way to make a huge impact on Bay State youth. One supporter says it will be a lifeline for marginalized kids, who are more likely to experience suicidal ideation."
The 988 Lifeline website stresses, "You do not need to be suicidal to contact 988."
The 988 Lifeline offers mental health support 24/7.
