Medicinal and recreational cannabis are legal in Massachusetts but with regulations.

Here is how it all went down.

Bay State voters approved the Massachusetts Sensible Marijuana Policy Initiative on November 4, 2008. Passage of the measure decriminalized the possession of less than one ounce of marijuana, making possession punishable by a fine of $100.

The punishment for minors was slightly more and included community service and enrollment in a drug awareness program.

Before the passage of the Massachusetts Sensible Marijuana Policy Initiative, you could face up to a year in jail and a $500 fine for possessing marijuana.

In 2012, Massachusetts voters approved the Massachusetts Medical Marijuana Initiative, which eliminated the penalties for the possession and use of marijuana for people with a state-issued registration card.

Four years later, on November 8, 2016, voters approved a ballot question making recreational marijuana use legal in Massachusetts. Again, there are regulations. Most importantly, you must be 21 years or older to purchase or grow adult-use marijuana in Massachusetts.

So how is it going?

Marijuana Moment says total marijuana purchases for 2023 reached $1.8 billion in Massachusetts, and December was a big month for legal weed.

"Massachusetts marijuana retailers sold a record $157 million worth of legal cannabis products in December, according to figures released by the state's Cannabis Control Commission – bringing the state's total recorded sales for 2023 to nearly $1.8 billion," according to the site.
