Massachusetts Has a Data Portal for Monitoring Car Crashes
In 2024, there were nearly 100,000 motor vehicle crashes in Massachusetts, many of which were car crashes, down slightly from 2023.
In 2022, there were 434 fatal car crashes in Massachusetts, an increase from the 413 reported in 2021. In 2023, there were 328 fatalities.
Each year, about 2500 serious crashes involve serious injuries.

Spada Law Group LLC says almost all of the fatal crashes occurred in urban areas "indicating that fatal crashes are much likely to take place in cities in Massachusetts."
Men are far more likely to die or face serious injuries in Massachusetts car crashes, mostly involving 25-to-35-year-olds.
Alcohol, speed and distracted drivers are contributing factors in most serious crashes in Massachusetts.
Spada Law Group LLC says, "In 2022, 3,308 people were killed due to distracted driving, and 289,310 people were injured in car crashes involving distracted drivers nationwide."
MassDOT has created a website, IMPACT, which it says is a "tool for researching crash-related data in Massachusetts." MassDOT says, "IMPACT helps with public safety initiatives and raises awareness about crashes in our state."
"Users have access to pre-built reports or tools for analysis."
IMPACT is sobering in that it provides almost "real time" data on the number of year-to-date crashes, pedestrian crashes, bicycle crashes, the age of crash victims, the severity of their injuries, and the number of fatalities.
IMPACT has multiple features, including interactive data dashboards, data extraction, reports, data query and visualization, crash tabulation and charting, and safety analysis tools.
Bicyclists, pedestrians, or "others" accounted for 25 percent of traffic deaths in Massachusetts in 2022.
