Mass. Teachers Now Required To Undergo Suicide Prevention Training
The new Gun Legislation signed Wednesday by Governor Patrick, also requires Mass. teachers to receive suicide prevention training at least once every three years.
The provision was included by State Rep. Antonio Cabral of New Bedford, at the urging of parent Brian Fernandes whose son committed suicide in 2008.
Cabral believes teachers can play an important role in suicide prevention.
There is no funding provided for the training, but Cabral says he'd be willing to talk about it, if it becomes an issue for school districts.
