A 60-year-old man from Cape Cod died Saturday afternoon while climbing Mt. Jefferson in the White Mountains of New Hampshire.

According to New Hampshire Fish and Game, the man was hiking with a small group when he collapsed shortly before 2 p.m. Good Samaritan hikers with medical backgrounds started CPR and called 911. A Blackhawk helicopter from the New Hamsphire Army National Guard pulled the hiker from the summit, but he did not survive.

Authorities said the man, from Mashpee, was an experienced hiker and in good health before he collapsed. His name was withheld pending notification of his family.

Mt. Jefferson stands at 5,716 feet.
