Details are scant at this time but police say a man walking along the newly installed cement walkway atop the New Bedford hurricane barrier Monday afternoon suffered serious injuries.

Lt. John Chaves of the New Bedford Police Department says the man's injuries were severe enough to warrant transportation to Rhode Island Hospital. The man's name and age have not been released.

Police say the man lost his footing along the path that runs along East Rodney French Boulevard around 4:30pm Monday and fell over towards the water side of the barrier.

Terry Conde lives nearby and was walking along the fresh cement path with her daughter.

She tells WBSM News any planned safety features of the path should be installed right away.

There are no handrails currently installed. However, early artist renditions of the completed path show railings intended for both sides of the walkway.

Sections of the path remain under construction.

The incident remains under investigation.
