UPDATED (6:57 pm) — The victim was identified by the Bristol County District Attorney's Office as Adilson Neves, 36, of New Bedford.

NEW BEDFORD — A man has died in a shooting on David Street in New Bedford on Wednesday afternoon, according to New Bedford Police Public Information Officer Lt. Scott Carola.

At approximately 3:15 pm Wednesday, police received a call for a victim who sustained a gunshot wound in the area of David Street, Carola stated at a press conference.

According to Carola, the victim was transported to St. Luke's Hospital, where he succumbed to his wounds.

He said that police have established a crime scene on David Street between Cleveland Street and East Rodney French Boulevard and are working to investigate the case jointly with the Massachusetts State Police and detectives assigned to the Bristol County District Attorney's Office.

Carola declined to say if there is a suspect in the case.

"The investigation is very active and very early at this time," he said.
