New Bedford Police discovered the body of a 43-year-old man at a makeshift campsite in a wooded area adjacent to 12 Cove Street last night shortly after 7 p.m.

The man had died of an apparent accidental fentanyl overdose, the Office of Bristol County District Attorney Thomas M. Quinn III confirmed today.

Quinn spokesman Gregg Miliote said that according to a police report, the man's girlfriend called police around 7:04 p.m. Police responded to the area and discovered the man's body in a tent that the couple shared.

New Bedford Police spokesman Lt. Nathan Rodriguez referred all questions to Quinn's office.
