New Bedford Café Could Appear in Netflix’s Love on the Spectrum
The SouthCoast may get their fair share of celebrity buzz, but this weekend the spotlight was shining right on downtown New Bedford.
On Saturday, September 27, the beloved Portuguese café Tia Maria’s welcomed two very special guests — Pari and Tina, Season 3 cast members of Netflix’s hit show Love on the Spectrum.
This isn’t the first time the café has rolled out the red carpet. Tia Maria’s has a history of attracting celebrities right alongside its loyal locals.
A Whaling City Stopover
The pair made their way from Boston to New Bedford by train and kicked off their SouthCoast adventure with a visit to the New Bedford Whaling Museum. After soaking in some history, they walked just a few steps down Union Street to Tia Maria’s European Café, where owner Jessica Coelho Arruda and her staff were in for quite the surprise.
“The film crew reached out to us, and when they arrived, my staff started fan-girling right along with the customers,” Arruda laughed. “They filmed here, so maybe we’ll make the cut and be featured on Netflix.”

Lunch Fit for the Stars
So what was on the menu? Pari, who follows a gluten-free diet, enjoyed a BLT on gluten-free bread, while Tina, who is lactose-free, went for a Pesto Tomato Melt on gluten-free bread as well.

“They were so sweet,” Arruda added. “It was a fun, exciting day for everyone in the restaurant.”
A SouthCoast Cameo on Netflix?
Whether or not Tia Maria’s makes its streaming debut remains to be seen, but one thing’s certain: this was a day to remember and another exciting celebrity encounter at the popular Portuguese restaurant.
