Local Fallen Fishermen Remembered At Memorial Day Service
City officials and family members of fishermen lost at sea gathered at City Pier 3 Monday morning for the Port Society's annual Fishermen's Memorial Service.
A bell toll after each of the 300-plus names read from the memorial roll. The most recent name, Michael J. Willett, was added only this past March.
Willett's vessel, Hear No Evil, was coincidentally moored just behind the ceremonial stage.
Gabriel Miranda's grandfather was killed when his ship, The Wanderer, went down.
Miranda is also a fisherman and says the danger "is still very real, still there."
The message of the service was to remember those lost serving in the city's largest industry.
Prayers and hymns were shared and a wreath in remembrance was cast into the sea to mark the souls' final resting place.
