DARTMOUTH - Dartmouth's Acting Police Chief Brian Levesque has been appointed as the town's next Chief of Police.

The Select Board unanimously approved Levesque's appointment to the post Monday night, with Levesque not stepping into the position until current Chief Robert Szala's retirement is finalized. A contract won't be negotiated until that point.

In December, Szala announced his plans to retire following a mild heart attack in April. His recovery process has prevented him from returning to work.

Levesque was named Acting Police Chief in May.
