Edward Snowden's legal adviser says his client's leaks about the government's surveillance program have been "profoundly valuable."

The ACLU's Ben Wizner spoke on NBC's "Meet the Press" and said there's much the U.S. could gain in conversations with Snowden.

Wizner says Snowden's remarks to the "Washington Post" that he's won and the mission has been accomplished were misunderstood.  He says what Snowden meant was that he has accomplished bringing the American public, the courts and Congress into the conversation about the government's surveillance program.

Wizner says he's in contact with Snowden "very regularly" and that his client hopes to come back to the United States.  Asked why Snowden hasn't come home, Wizner said Snowden doesn't believe "the cost of his act of conscience should be a life behind bars." (Metro Networks Inc.)
