Keith Middle School placed second in the Southeast Massachusetts Chapter Competition of MathCounts on February 1.

With 15 schools participating, just four schools, including Keith, qualified for the Massachusetts state final competition in March. Keith Middle School is the first New Bedford public school to qualify for the state finals.

MathCounts is a national organization with competitions that test students’ math skills and their collaborative skills working together as small teams.

The Southeast Massachusetts Chapter Competition was hosted at Keith Middle School and conducted by the Naval Undersea Warfare Center of Newport, R.I. Middle schools from across southeastern Massachusetts, as far away as Norwell, Martha’s Vineyard and Falmouth participated, with more than 130 students involved.

Keith Middle School will participate in the March 4 state finals in Boston. State champions will compete at Disney World in Orlando, Florida for the national championship in May.

“We wish our students luck at the state championship in March as they demonstrate not only their brilliance in math, but their strengths in working together and competing as a team,” said Superintendent Dr. Pia Durkin. “Our students and staff in MathCounts at Keith Middle School as well as our partners at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center continue to excel and we look forward to cheering them on in Boston next month."
