Southern New England is battening down the hatches for a major winter storm and the snow totals could be record breaking.

Forecast models suggest this impending blizzard bringing nearly as much snow to the area as the epic Blizzard of '78.

While we won't know the totals until everything is said and done, we definitely have a strong indication of just how bad it's expected to be—a legendary meteorologist is broadcasting nearby.

For nearly 40 years, Jim Cantore has been an on-air meteorologist and storm tracker for The Weather Channel. Starting with the cable network in July 1986, Cantore is known as the man they send in when the weather is really bad.

Why Jim Cantore’s Arrival Signals a Serious Storm

During Winter Storm Hernando, hitting the Northeast February 22-23, Jim Cantore is broadcasting from Plymouth, MA.

Yes, as this epic storm moves up the entire Eastern seaboard, The Weather Channel chose to send their Chief Meteorologist to the coast of Massachusetts.

His presence underscores just how serious this winter storm is expected to be.

What Winter Storm Hernando Could Bring to Massachusetts

Between the heavy, wet snow and the high wind gusts, Cantore says the biggest impacts from this intensifying storm are going to be in Massachusetts.

Power outages, coastal flooding and whiteout conditions are expected during this prolonged storm that could deliver historic snowfall totals.

Could Winter Storm Hernando This Rival the Blizzard of ’78?

Though we'll have to wait and see how the storm actually pans out, future generations could be talking about the Blizzard of '26 the same way we reference the Blizzard of '78 today.
