One of my favorite ways to clear my head is by hopping on my bike and exploring the SouthCoast. Whether it's the backroads of Dartmouth, engulfed in the wetlands along the Mattapoisett Rail Trail, or soaking in the waterfront sunrise as I cross over the New Bedford-Fairhaven Bridge, just being outside soothes my soul.

There's something about the fresh air, the quiet backroads and the views of Buzzards Bay that instantly melts away stress while also giving me a great workout. That's exactly why the Buzzards Bay Coalition's annual Watershed Ride has always caught my attention, and this year's ride might be the best one yet.

If you've ever been looking for an excuse to dust off your bike while supporting a great cause, consider this your sign.

A New Route for More Riders

The Buzzards Bay Coalition is celebrating the 20th anniversary of its annual Buzzards Bay Watershed Ride on Sunday, October 4, and it's introducing a brand-new 20-mile route to make the event more accessible than ever. Starting at Bourne Intermediate School and finishing in beautiful Woods Hole, the new course is welcoming to casual riders, families and anyone who's been hesitant to tackle the longer distances in previous years.

Of course, if you're up for more of a challenge, the longer routes are still available. No matter which distance you choose, you'll pedal through some of the most scenic landscapes the region has to offer, including cranberry bogs, charming villages, farmland, coastal roads and stunning waterfront views.

More Than Just a Bike Ride

What I love most is that this isn't simply about logging miles. Every rider is helping the Buzzards Bay Coalition continue its mission of protecting and restoring the clean water, wildlife and natural beauty that make Buzzards Bay so special.

The event is fully supported, too, with rest stops, lunch, mechanical assistance, SAG support, optional bike shuttles and an end-of-ride celebration overlooking the bay. This year's ride will even feature live musical surprises along the route.

I'll Always Support Getting Outside

As someone who uses cycling as my own form of therapy, exercise and "me time," I can't think of a better way to spend a fall Sunday. Whether you're an experienced cyclist or someone looking to take on your first organized ride, this feels like one of those events you'll be glad you signed up for.
