Infant Hospitalized, Fall River Mother Charged

PORTSMOUTH, RI — A Fall River mother was charged with DUI and child abuse early Saturday morning.

Portsmouth Police Officers stopped a car after receiving a report of an erratic driver in the area of West Main Road. Officers said they arrested Valerie Ogarro,44, of Fall River after she showed signs of intoxication.

During interview officers also noticed an overturned child safety seat facing the floor in the backseat containing a 19-day old infant.

Responding officers were able to remove the infant, who was transported to Hasbro Children's Hospital and has since been released to DCYF of Rhode Island.

Oggaro was released on personal recognizance following her arraignment at police headquarters and is scheduled for re-arraignment on Monday morning.
