There may be a lot of snow on the land, but the ice is also building up in our waterways.

The Coast Guard dispatched an ice-breaker vessel to New Bedford and Buzzards Bay to help diffuse the problem.

New Bedford Port Director Jeffrey Stieb tells WBSM News other marine activity, including a tugboat operated by the fire department, is helping to break up the ice as well.

Stieb says the tide and warmer rain forecast for next week will be helpful in ridding the harbor of ice. Until then, Stieb says vessels should use caution while navigating through the harbor and out to sea.
