If you’ve seen the news today, you know that Hurricane Matthew will likely impact the Southcoast area later this week.

Hurricanes can cause flooding, power outages, downed trees and even tornado's. The best way to minimize damage is to be prepared as best you can. Here’s what you can do now to be sure that you and your property stay safe.

The Red Cross recommends you take the following precautions:

  • Replace and restock disaster supplies as needed (water, non-perishable food, candles, batteries)
  • Bring anything in that may be blown away by the wind (bicycles, tables)
  • Close all windows, doors and hurricane shutters if you have them in your home
  • Turn your refrigerator and freezer on to the coldest setting, and keep doors closed as much as possible in case of a power outage
  • Turn off propane tanks
  • Unplug small appliances (can opener, toaster, microwave, etc.)
  • Fill your car's gas tank

November 30th marks the official end of hurricane season for our area.
