A historic building at 177 Cove Street will not be demolished for at least six more months. City councilors voted Tuesday night to put a six month delay on the former maternity hospital and funeral home that local developer Michael Panagakos plans to demolish. Panagakos said he bought the property and can do with it as he wants. At-Large Councilor Deborah Coelho, meanwhile, said the delay shows that the city respects its history.

The building is currently home to the House of Hope transitional housing program. Panagakos said the tenants will be out by May 12.
