They say you should never meet your heroes, but that doesn't apply when meeting legendary comedian Gilbert Gottfried.

He appeared this past Saturday night at White's of Westport as part of the SouthCoast Comedy Series, which has brought some of hottest names in comedy today to our region. But for Taylor Cormier and myself, this was the pinnacle; Gilbert is one of our favorite comedians, and we are huge fans of his Gilbert Gottfried's Amazing Colossal Podcast.

So we were especially excited when SouthCoast Comedy Series organizer Joe Rocco arranged it so that we could interview Gilbert backstage prior to his performance at White's. He could not have been any nicer or more accommodating, and I think he actually enjoyed spending some time talking with us.

You can check out the video of our interview above, which is pretty heavy on references to Gilbert's podcast. Old Groucho, John McGiver, the difference between stop-motion special effects and today's CGI in films—we covered a lot of ground in a short amount of time. The interview will be included in the next edition of Spooky Southcoast, airing on WBSM this Saturday night.

And Gilbert's performance was absolutely hysterical. Yes, he's raw and unfiltered, but he also has a brilliant comedic mind and is an absolute master of timing. One of the highlights was when he started doing material off his "Dirty Jokes" DVD, which is a must-have for comedy fans.
