The city celebrated the grand opening of the new and improved farmers market at Custom House Square Thursday evening.

The downtown market has been up and running for about a month, but things are now in full swing.

Scott Peets from Peets Farm in Dartmouth says visitors are taking advantage of the multiple payment methods.

"All the customers are definitely taking advantage of SNAP benefits and using their credit cards so the system is working. We need to grow it more and just keep it going," Peets said.

The market is operated by Mass in Motion New Bedford and has partnered with SEMAP to provide locally grown foods to city residents.

The downtown market is open every Thursday 2-6 pm through October 31st.

Two other markets in the city are located at Brooklawn Park and Clasky Common Park every Saturday.
