The Story Behind the End Zone Militia at Patriots Games Played in Foxboro
The New England Patriots Endzone Militia has been guarding the north end zone in Foxboro for nearly 30 years, firing their flint-lock gunpowder muskets each time the good guys score a touchdown.
The official New England Patriots website says, "The Militia was started in 1996 by Captain Geoff Campbell, a member of the reenactment unit for the 9th Massachusetts Regiment."
When the New England Revolution soccer team was formed and began playing its home games in Foxboro, the Militia was enlisted to accompany the color guard onto the field before matches. Soon, the Militia "secured a regular spot on the turf at all Patriots and Revolution contests."
The Patriots say, "Comprised of over 30 members in total, the End Zone Militia brings 20 to the field during each Patriots home game."
Militia members dress in traditional reenactment garb while working ballgames. The men are "decked in authentic 18th-century clothing."
Members interact with players and fans, pose for photos, and sign autographs in addition to the celebratory shots fired off after a touchdown, "perhaps the things they are best known for."
