The old Civil Defense building at the corner of Hillman and County Streets in New Bedford has been purchased.

Mayor Jon Mitchell says the City Council authorized the auction of the city-owned building several months ago. Speaking on his weekly radio program, Mayor Mitchell says the building was purchased by a real estate developer who is looking to renovate the building.

The historic building, built in 1893 as a brick firehouse, will be transformed into mixed office and living space by the developer.

Renovation on the structure is currently underway.
