Five people are arrested after a fight and shots fired in New Bedford's South End.

New Bedford Police say a fight at Potomska and South Second Streets was reported shortly before midnight Sunday. Soon after that report, the city's ShotSpotter gunshot detection system pinpointed five shots fired at Rivet and South Second Streets. A black sedan was seen leaving the area at a high rate of speed.

Police recovered three shells at the scene, and two victims, a 38-year-old New Bedford man and a 66-year-old New Bedford woman, were treated for injuries apparently sustained during the fight.

Police soon located a black sedan at the Petro Mart on Coggeshall Street with five men inside. A search of the men and the car turned up a Hi-Point .380 caliber handgun. All five were arrested and face various charges.

Arrested were:

  • Isaiah Matthews, 18, New Bedford
  • Jacob Isaac Matthews-Almeida, 18, New Bedford
  • Nyseer Frank Cortes, 18, New Bedford
  • 16-year-old Juvenile, New Bedford

All face charges of carrying an unlicensed firearm, carrying a loaded firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition and mace, discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building, two counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, assault with a dangerous weapon, assault and battery and destruction of property over $250.

Also arrested was 18-year-old Cenidy Cohen of New Bedford, who faces charges of carrying an unlicensed firearm, carrying a loaded firearm, and unlawful possession of ammunition and mace.
