First Half Thoughts Of Patriots Preseason Opener

Here are a few quick thoughts on the first half of the New England Patriots preseason opener against the Green Bay Packers.

Brady Plays- Although initial reports yesterday said it was highly unlikely that Tom Brady would play, after missing Tuesday's practice and Wednesday's walk-through, the star was on display early as he played the first two series of the game. After starting the first drive on his team's own 2-yard line Brady went a rather quiet 1-4 for just 10 yards, before he was taken out.

Garoppolo Underwhelms- New England's Backup quarterback, Jimmy Garoppolo, struggled once he stepped in for Brady as he went just 3-8 for 50 yards in the second quarter. The QB also got lucky as the Green Bay defense let him off the hook on a couple of possible interceptions.

 Gray Looks Strong- Jonas Gray, who burst on the scene after a 200-yard game against Indianapolis last season, got off to a hot start tonight. The power back who is looking for an increased role this year had six rushes for 73 yards including a 55-yard scamper to the end zone for the Patriots' first score. Hopefully he sets his alarm for the right time tonight.

Pats D Bends But Doesn't Break- New England's defense looked solid in the first quarter against the Packers' first unit. While they gave up some yards in the early downs, the group tightened up on multiple fourth down plays to force turnovers on downs including a goal line stop at the beginning of the game. New addition Jabaal Sheard looked good in his first go through with the Pats.

Gostkowski Looks Good- Stephen Gostkowski got one opportunity to contribute at the end of the first half and he came through as usual. The veteran kicker drilled a 56-yard field goal that had plenty of leg.

New England is up 11-9 at the half.
