Fire Ravages Waterfront Home in Mattapoisett
A waterfront home at 56 Ocean Drive on Mattapoisett Point suffered around $200,000 in damage in a midday fire.
Firefighters today battled a tough blaze in dry conditions and high gusting winds. The call came in at 12:14 p.m., the fire was knocked down before 1 p.m., and the last fire unit cleared the scene around 3:30 p.m., according to Mattapoisett Fire Chief Andrew Murray.
The property belongs to Conrad Roy Sr. and Janice Roy of Tucker Roy Marine Salvage and Towing, records show. There were no reports of injuries, despite initial reports that someone may have been trapped inside. Three people were home at the time, and all occupants were accounted for and found in the back yard, Murray said.
Conrad Roy Sr. is the grandfather of Conrad Roy III, the boyfriend of Michelle Carter, the woman who served most a 15-month jail sentence for involuntary manslaughter for her role in the 2014 suicide of the younger Roy. She was released from jail in January.
At the time of Tuesday's fire, winds were gusting hard off the water at 25 to 30 mph, creating difficulties in extinguishing the fire. A total of 22 firefighters worked hard for 35 minutes to control the blaze, Murray said.
The Rochester Fire Department brought tankers to the scene because there are no fire hydrants in the area. Fairhaven assisted at the scene, and Marion covered Mattapoisett Station 1. The Providence Canteen provided support. Mattapoisett Police assisted with traffic control.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Mattapoisett Fire Department and Massachusetts State Police fire investigation unit.
Correction: This story has been updated to reflect that Conrad Roy Sr. is the grandfather, not the father, of Conrad Roy III.
