NEW BEDFORD - New Bedford firefighters were able to contain a north end fire to just a single bedroom of a three story apartment building Monday.

The fire was reported just after 3 P.M. at 91 Hathaway Street, with smoke coming from the second floor. The building was safely evacuated and the fire did not escape a second floor bedroom before being extinguished.

Fire officials say the apartment the fire took place in was unoccupied. The first and third floors sustained water damage.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
