New Bedford School Committee member Lawrence Finnerty says he will not seek re-election this fall.

Finnerty tells WBSM News he's been wrestling with the decision for awhile, but a recent vacation with his grand-children convinced him it was time to step down. " I've made a decision I'm not going to run for re-election to the School Committee," said Finnerty. "This is eight years for me, two terms, and its time for new blood and new ideas."

Finnerty says he thinks the administration had made gains that are now being recognized by the state. "I think there has been good progress in the area of cirriculum and scheduling and also teaching and learning, and I'm pleased the state has recognized those strong improvements."

He also praised the effort made by New Bedford Educators Association President Lou St. John for working hard with the administration to help bring about some of those improvements
